Devote yourselves to nation’s welfare, PM asks govt servants


Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday asked the public servants to devote themselves to serving the country’s mass people as it is their prime responsibility.

“Serving people is your main responsibility,” she said while speaking at the annual conference of Bangladesh Administrative Service Association at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC).

Mentioning that the government formulate budget and takes development projects for the country’s development, the Prime Minister said, “You have to supervise so that the projects are implemented properly.”

She directed the field-level public servants to formulate district-based development demands so that the government can prepare annual development programmes accordingly for the country’s balanced development.

Hasina said the government wants to make the country free of poverty and beggars. “We want to build the society through balanced development,” she said.

She asked the government officials to pay special attention to the reduction of income disparity from grassroots level to central.

Directing them to expedite the government’s efforts to root out corruption from the country, the Prime Minister said, “You have to create resistance against terrorism, drug addiction and militancy to save the future generation.”

The Prime Minister also directed them to ensure public welfare up to the grassroots level through their services, saying their salaries and allowances come from people’s hard-earned money.

Pointing out the false allegation of graft in the Padma Bridge project, she said she can never compromise when it comes to honesty of the Bangalees and her government took the matter as a big challenge and won against the World Bank. “With this, our government has proved that the Bangalees can live keeping their heads high facing any conspiracy,” she said.

Hasina said she wants to dedicate everything to people’s welfare for whom Father of the Nation struggled for a long time and sacrificed himself.

Describing the free flow of information as the precondition of empowerment of people and good governance, she said her government framed Right to Information Act while Electronic Government Procurement system has also been introduced to ensure transparency, accountability and competition in the public administration.

The Prime Minister elaborated steps of her government to further accelerate works in the field administration, saying the Public Administration Award, promotion in time, new posts for senior assistant secretary and above officials have been created in various ministries and divisions.

She said approval has already been given to introduce performance-based evaluation system to make the annual performance objective and result-oriented.

Hasina mentioned the introduction of the electronic filing system in 64 districts and eight divisional commissioners’ offices as well as the PMO and the Cabinet Division and three other departments.

About the National Web Portal, she said the world’s largest web portal with the websites of some 25,000 offices was developed to reach information to people’s doorsteps and such a portal is the outcome of the tireless efforts of the administration.

The Prime Minister said the annual performance agreement is being done in all the ministries, divisions as well as other organisations to ensure institutional transparency and completion of work within a specific time.

Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, State Minister for Public Administration Ismat Ara Sadique and Cabinet Secretary M Shafiul Islam also spoke.
